Information: Aids to assist a disabled person with daily living are supplied by the Social Services Department. These include bath aids, walking aids, toilet aids, high seat chairs and kitchen aids. Wheelchairs can be provided on short term loan. An adaptation to your home may be required. These include minor items such as additional stair rails or more major work such as the installation of stair lifts, ramps or extension work. Aids are available on loan or they can be purchased. Aids which have a nursing application are provided by the Health Authority. These include incontinence pads, aids for the bed and commodes. Please contact your doctor, district nurse or health visitor for advice on these aids.

Information: Beaconview is a 50 bedded home run by Lancashire County Council in Old Skelmersdale. It is divided into 4 separate living areas and offers day care and short term care to frail and confused elderly people living on their own or with a carer, and permanent residential care for those people who can no longer manage in their own homes. If you are caring for an elderly person who would benefit from these services then please contact your local Social Services Office. A financial assessment will be completed for short term respite care and permanent residential care applications.

Information: Bickerstaffe Day Unit caters for the older adult with mental health problems. All referrals to the Unit are via a G.P. we cater for both functional and organic clients. Functional clients i.e. those with anxiety, depression, or long standing mental health problems attend on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
Organic clients i.e. those with Alzheimer's disease or any dementia type illness attend Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.
We also offer an advice service for carers experiencing problems.

Information: People whose sight is impaired may be registered after medical diagnosis, as blind, or partially sighted. Registration is entirely voluntary, but eligibility for registration necessary to qualify for some benefits such as travel concessions, reduced T.V. licences, talking books and special aids to assist with everyday tasks. Appointments with Consultant Opthalmologists for registration purposes can be arranged through your General Practitioner. Social Workers can assist with many problems arising as a result of visual impairment. Social Service Departments also employ Rehabilitation Officers who can advise and offer instruction on self care and domestic skills, braille, and typing, and independent mobility and travel skills.

There is a charge of £2 for the car badge, the expiry date of which will be 3 years from the date of issue.
